End of month progress - August 2014

Saturday, August 30, 2014

The month is coming to an end and summer is almost over. Change is in the air and it feels amazing. Summer in Georgia seems to last forever. The mornings start out cool and crisp while it gets hot and humid during the day. Halloween and fall decorations are starting to litter store shelves. Cinnamon brooms are hoarded near the entrances of stores, forcing that pungent spicy scent to burn your sinuses. Starbucks unveiled their pumpkinless pumpkin spice lattes earlier than usual. Yup, this is my favorite time of year. I am looking forward to it getting colder and Thanksgiving.

This month has been a bit rocky for me. I started off with an ulcer that left me with little to no energy to workout. Not to mention, I had to eat frequently so my stomach wouldn't be empty. No worries though, as soon as o started feeling better I got back in to kicking ass in my workouts. I didn't really bother with weighing myself much this month. I was pretty sure my progress wouldn't be where I wanted it to be. So I already set myself up for disappointment. I didn't eat as strict as I normally do, and just said fuck it. Staying within my calorie limit, of course. Lol.

Today I weighed myself and found out I lost 4lbs since my last weigh in. Which was at the beginning of the month. I am pretty proud of myself. Even though I didn't eat as strict, I still pushed myself to work out hard. Even on days I wasn't feeling like it. I met my first goal, to get under 200 lbs. Now it's time to finally push myself harder than I ever have. To get to as healthy as I possibly can. I wonder where I will be in my progress by the end of the year? I'm excited!

After being MIA from working out for a week and a half, I am finally back! I did a quick workout this morning and instantly felt great. My stomach is still weak and my energy is low, but I felt great to get the endorphins flowing.

I joined the Walgreens fitness rewards program. Still not sure what will come out of it, but hey, can't hurt right? Lol.

I am finally down one pant size. I can fit into my size 12s now and it feels great. I am slightly annoyed because I have to buy new jeans now. I didn't really get to wear my nice jeans I bought on my Texas jeans for long. This is when consignment shopping comes in handy. Trade in my name brand 14's and get "new" Jeans.  :)

Here's more food porn!  :

Ginger Chicken with Rice noodles and lightly cooked veggies

Homemade JalapeƱo popcorn

Snazzy cookies that I didn't buy. They sounded delicious though!

I am proud to say that I have lost 18 pounds so far. I am 12 pounds away from meeting my first goal. I am pretty hyped up!

I have been having a great time running.  Each week gets easier and easier. I'm still rubbish with anything dealing with cardio, but I am working hard and pushing myself as hard as I can.

Last month I bought a 1-month gym membership on groupon. In a way I felt the gym membership was distracting me from my workout routine. Its a tiny gym and there were a ton of machine hogs. No problem, I made the best of my time there by running on the treadmill.

Well, yesterday was my last day at the gym and I was a bit sad because I really loved running on that treadmill. So today I decided that I should start running at the park. I did a lot better than I thought I was going to do. I am really optimistic that adding the running twice a week to my circuit training and light weight training is going to awesome. Lol.

i am really happy with the way my weightloss progress is coming along. so far my legs are toning up nicely and my arms are starting to look better. in fact with my previous workout routine never toned my upper body and legs like this time around.

I forgot to post my photo progress of Late January/ Early February.  If I don’t forget, I will post pictures at the end of March.

and just for comparison here are some before pictures.

|| Gym Time ||

Soooooooooo, I finally got my gym membership Monday. Yesterday was the first day, and it was overwhelming at first. There are so many machines and so many possibilities. It seriously feels like I am starting this weight loss journey all over again.  I guess I would consider this the second chapter in the weight loss story. Seems like everything I did before this was to prepare me for harder workouts.
The gym membership came at the right time. I quit my job at the Gap, due to soaring gas prices. I have been feeling pretty useless and restless at home. Also my birthday had just passed and I used my birthday an excuse to eat awful. Lol. It was worth it….. to a point. I normally don’t consume sugary coffee drinks, drink a lot of beer or eat pizza. My body instantly got addicted to the sugar. I find myself craving sugar all day. I haven’t given in since my birthday, which is good.

Yesterday’s first trip to the gym was amazing. I did a little bit of everything to get the hang out how the machines work.  After experimenting with the weight machines I focused roughly over 40 minutes to cardio and an hour on upper body work outs. I am glad that my endurance has gone up. 75 lbs ago I wouldn’t have been able to keep up with any work out and felt embarrassed. I probably wouldn’t have gone back. Lol. But I am grateful that I have worked so hard on my body. Now it’s time to work even harder.

My arms felt like putty yesterday after the work out. Thankfully my arms don’t feel as bad as I anticipated. I feel like I can do a little upper body work outs today. Though I should just do a little so I can let my muscles heal properly. I am going to focus on getting as much cardio in and then work on my legs.

My new short term goal is to lose 20 lbs by the end of May. The new long term goal for the year is to have a total of 40 pounds gone.  This feels like an overall realistic goal. I am only 25 lbs away from meeting my all time goal of losing 100 pounds. 2012

|| Workouts ||

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

I really haven’t posted a blog with workout routine yet. I am shocked that I actually never took the time out to type it out. I honestly feel like I could be here all day typing everything out, so I will post a few of my favorite work outs. The “easy” ones. Normally I tend to alternate upper body and lower body works outs every other day. My upper body work outs just tend to deal with dumbbells and doing curls. Lower body work outs tend to deal with squats and the “mule kicks”.

I always start every work out with pushups and end the work out with a few set of crunches.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Stretching and “warming up”

Before you engage in any kind of work outs, it’s always good to stretch. Stretching can improve your flexibility and after awhile flexibility will help prevent any injuries from working out. Below is warm up tips and stretching tips..

Stretching:

Neck: Sit or stand with your arms hanging freely on your sides. Turn head side to side, hold for 3 to five seconds for each side. Repeat 3 times.

Shoulder and back of upper arm: Stand or sit and place right hand on left shoulder. With left hand, pull right elbow across chest toward left shoulder and hold 10 to 15 seconds. Repeat on each side 3 times.

Stretches triceps, top of shoulders, waist: Keep knees slightly flexed. Stand or sit with arms overhead. Hold elbow with hand of opposite arm. Pull elbow behind head gently as you slowly lean to side until mild stretch is felt. Hold 10 to 15 sec. Repeat on other side

Warm ups:

My favorite warm ups are :

Jumping jacks

Push ups

Crab walk: works your whole back side with emphasis on your triceps

Start by sitting on the floor with your knees bent in front of you. Place both hands, palms down, on the floor at your side and lift your butt off the ground. Now start “crab walking” forwards or backwards.

I like to warm up by crab walking around the living room. It feels and seems utterly ridiculous but it really feels good to do these before I jump into the work outs below.

-----------------------------------------

Two of my favorite easy work outs are:

Mule kicks: works your hamstrings, glutes, and lower back.

Get down on your hands and knees with your hands shoulder-width apart, back strait and knees bent at 90 degree angle. Slowly kick your right leg straight back and up as high as possible. Keep your hips fixed squarely in place. Hold this peak position for about five seconds, then bring your leg back down to the starting position. Then do the same with your left leg.

Do 3 normal sets and then on the fourth set hold your leg out on the last kick for as long as you can hold it. I admit, it hurts like freaking hell. It’s damn well worth it.

Squats: works your quads, hamstrings, glutes, lower back and hip flexors.

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. With your head up and eyes forward, bend your knees until your butt is a couple of inches above the floor. Lean your upper body slowly forward as you go down, until your shoulders are out over your knees. But be sure that your knees do not protrude past your toes. Then, keeping your heels on the floor, slowly stand using only your legs to lift you.

At first, try practicing these facing a wall with your toes 4 to 6 inches from the wall. This is a great way of correcting technique by ensuring that your knees are not going too far forward. Also if you feel that a full squat is too difficult at first, lower your body only as far as you can, until you develop strength and flexibility needed to lower your body all the way down.

61lbs gone...

Thursday, December 1, 2011

Achoooo!

It has been pretty much over a year since I started my weight loss journey. The end of November 2011 brings my total weight loss to 61lbs gone. I have gone from a size 22 pant size to a size 14. I am really proud of myself. Not bad considering that I fell off the “diet” band wagon in the middle of the year. None the less I have met my original personal goal, fit into a size 14 jean.

I know everyone likes to start New Years resolutions. I personally don’t like to make big plans. Things can change dramatically in a year. Instead I like to set small goals that will help me meet my ultimate personal goal. For the year of 2012 I want my total weight loss to be 100lbs. It sounds like a lot to lose, but that’s only 39lbs to lose. I am already 10 lbs lighter than I was when I met my husband in 2004. I had always been on the chubby side growing up, but that’s around the time I gained a lot of weight. It was a mixture of over eating because my dad had died the year before and then it was a mixture of over eating because my husband, who has a high metabolism, ate a lot.

The first small goal is to lose 10 lbs for my birthday, which is Valentine’s Day. I plan to lose the 10lbs by ass kicking work outs and eating super healthy. I am going to cut out fried foods, cut down on meat consumption and give up the sweet delicious scones from star bucks. With Christmas on the way, I am only going to allow myself that day to eat sweets, but I also plan on doing a super duper ass kicking workout….

My work outs have been consisting on toning my thighs and butt, and trying to tone my arms. Most of the weight I have lost has been from my lower body and the chest area. I am still hanging on to the weight in my stomach and arms. I would really love a gym membership so I can get back in to weight lifting and have access to new types of exercise. I have more energy and am less tired so my work outs are more enjoyable. I feel like I can really challenge myself though, I think that’s why I have been trying to ways to feel the burn.

Walking

Friday, August 19, 2011

Yesterday evening was a great evening to walk. This time we didn’t stray too far from home and we even walked out 6 year old Chihuahua, Gizmo. Again we cut off into trails in the woods. It was amazing. You could hear small birds with big songs, hopping from tree to tree in the pine and oak canopies. I brought my camera this time to get fantastic shots, but as I turned the camera to get my first shot, the batteries died. Do’oh! I really need to check these kinds of things before I leave the house. Lol.

I didn’t notice how sore I was from the day before until I started to jog a bit. Everything from my mid torso to my calves was a little tight. I took it easy, because I didn’t want to push my luck and feel like complete and utter shit the next day. I am crazy about the weather in the evenings, low humidity and in the mid to upper 70’s. A welcome break from the insanely high humidity and uppers 90’s. Whew, summer time in the south is murder. This however is my favorite time of year. I love how the seasons change. You can just feel in the air that fall is slowly approaching. The position of the sun triggers nostalgia. It’s just the perfect time to get back on track and take charge of my life again. Right now, I am not really concerned about losing a whole mess of weight; I am more concerned about feeling better and eating right. If anything weight loss is a perk. It just really really feels good to cut out gluten and working on getting sugar out my life again.

I found out yesterday that one of my aunts have colon cancer. This is devastating to me! I just wish I could be back home in Texas right now. I just really hate being so far away and knowing so little. Hopefully my trip back to Texas will come sooner than later.

Spiders, mushrooms, and snakes... oh my

Thursday, August 18, 2011

I started my jogging yesterday. The burn feels so good. I am a little sore today, but it was totally worth it. I forget how much I love this. I love the endorphin rush you get after exercising. It makes you feel happy and full of life. This morning I am in a wonderful mood and I slept great last night.

My husband and I went jogging at the Tom Triplet Park here in Pooler Georgia. We didn’t jog the track, instead we jogged the trails off in the woods. I really wish that I had my camera, because you wouldn’t believe the size of the spiders out there. Omg, it was outrageous. Also because of our recent line of storms we had last week, there were ton of crazy looking mushrooms growing. They were beautiful. The woods in Costal Georgia is waaaay different than Southern Texas. But none the less, it’s just as fun. I always felt that it’s always a good idea to mix your outdoor hobbies with your exercise routine.

In this case we mixed my husband’s hobby with exercise today. He is an outdoors kind of man. Anything dealing the with the Georgia woods, he’s as happy as a kid in a candy store. There are so many plants to discover and there are so many animals to see. It’s never a dull moment out there. Luckily there were no snakes out. Not that I have a fear of snakes, I actually love snakes to death. I just don’t want one, who blends in with his surrounding to spring forward and bite me in the ankle. This has happed twice to my husband. But thank god it has never been a poisonous snake. Youch.

Today we plan on doing more exercise. Since I am alittle sore I assume that we are going to a nice brisk walk, but I could be wrong. My husband could push me into running. Lol it’s always a good thing to have an exercise partner you push you… but I know my limitations for now. I have to work my way back up to the level I was last year when I lived in Texas. This reminds me, I need to buy another curling bar.

I’m really excited with the results. I still can’t believe that I am doing so well with this diet, and I can’t believe that I lost 43 pounds! It’s insane, and seeing the progress inspires me to keep going. I still have roughly 57 pounds to lose before I meet my overall goal of 100 pounds. On my post yesterday I said I was really impressed with the weight loss on my back. If you seen me right before this weight loss you know that my problem areas were my lower stomach and my lower back. Well, I still have a little bit of a gut, but my back looks amazing. I’m still a little hesitant to show my pictures, but part of this blog is to grow into a different person and gain confidence. I never thought that losing weight could be this easy. It just shows that you can do anything you put your mind to.

My Experience With Weight Training

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

I know when people think of weight training, they think of super huge body builders.  Weight training is the use of resistance methods like free weights, weight machines, resistance bands, or a person's own weight to build muscles and strength. Power lifting tends to focus on how much weight a person can lift at one time. Some women worry that they will bulk up if they start weight training. This is false, because women do not have enough testosterone in their body.  If you lift weights day after day for hours at a time then you'll start to bulk up.

I have been lifting a little bit of weights for 3 weeks already. So far my upper body has toned up pretty good. The body fat seems like it is starting to melt away. It’s pretty awesome. I have lost maybe two inches from each upper arm and maybe one inch from my chest area.  It really feels good to see that I am starting to notice a difference in my body.  Since I've been gaining muscle, i haven't lost any weight. I've been hovering around the same weight for 3 weeks now.

10 pound dumbbell

The benefits for weight training are:
  • ·         Strengthens bones in women
  • ·         Helps you raise your metabolism
  • ·         Helps you with your endurance and makes you stronger
  • ·         The more muscle you have the more calories you burn
  • ·         Increased lean muscle mass
  • ·         Helps prevent injury
  • ·         Improves your balance
  • ·         Improves your coordination
  • ·         Boosts your self-esteem
  • ·         Decreased risk of coronary disease

(via Cnn Health) Daily exercise helps keep the sniffles away

    Sunday, November 7, 2010

Regular exercise can improve your mood, help you lose weight, and add years to your life. Still need another reason to hit the gym? A new study suggests that working out regularly helps ward off colds and flu.
In the study, researchers followed a group of about 1,000 adults of all ages for 12 weeks during the winter and fall of 2008. During that time, people who logged at least 20 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise—such as jogging, biking, or swimming—on five or more days per week were sick with cold or flu symptoms for just five days, on average, compared with about 8.5 days among people who exercised one day per week or less.
    Health.com: 9 ways to stay sniffle-free

What's more, regular exercisers tended to have milder symptoms when they were ill. Compared with the people who barely exercised, those who worked out frequently rated their symptoms about 40percent less severe overall, according to the study, which was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. (Symptom severity was gauged with a standard questionnaire.)

Exercise is thought to boost the circulation of the virus-fighting white blood cells known as natural killer cells—the "Marine Corps and Army of the immune system," says the lead author of the study, David Nieman, a professor of health, leisure, and exercise science at Appalachian State University, in Boone, North Carolina. "Exercise gets these cells out…to deal with the enemy."

The increased immune activity brought on by exercise only lasts for about three hours, but the cumulative effect seems to keep disciplined exercisers healthier than most. "As the days add up, it adds up to improved protection [from] the viruses that can make you sick," Nieman says.
Health.com: Cold or flu? How to know if you’re too sick to work out

Endorphins may also play a role, says Len Horovitz, M.D., a pulmonary specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital, in New York City. These feel-good neurotransmitters—the source of the so-called runner's high—have "positive effects on the immune system, so it's not surprising there's a spike in immune cells," says Horovitz, who was not involved in the study.

It's also possible that people who exercise frequently tend to lead healthy lifestyles in general, and are therefore less likely than couch potatoes to get sick.

Nieman and his colleagues measured a host of factors besides exercise that could potentially affect a person's susceptibility to cold or flu, including age, gender, diet, stress levels, marital status, smoking, and educational attainment. Of all of these, physical activity was most closely linked to the number of days a person spent sick, although some characteristics, such as being married and eating a lot of fruit, seemed to help protect against colds and flu as well.

Health.com: 30-day cold and flu prevention calendar

"You can't do much about your age, and you can't do much about your gender. Here's something you can really do," Nieman says. "Exercise is the most powerful weapon that an individual has in their hand to reduce illness days."

    Mixing hobbies with exercise (birding)

    Saturday, November 6, 2010

Jogging at the Hazel Bazemore Park is pretty peaceful. It is an excellent spot to go bird watching and get your exercise on.  This has always been one of my favorite places to come to just to clear my mind. Every time my husband and I would drive through this park, I always wondered out loud, that it would be an awesome place to run. I was in no shape before to jog the entire park until now. Every other morning we come here, we spend the first half of our time here jogging, and the other half going through trails and bird watching.

If I had a better camera I would totally get pictures of the amazing birds we have seen. Here is a small lest of the few birds we have seen so far.
    • Green Jay
    • crested caracara
    • belted kingfisher
    • great kiskadee
    • cooper's hawk
    • American Kestrel
    • Red-tailed Hawk
    • Greater Roadrunner
    • Scissor-tailed Flycatcher
    • Baltimore Oriole
    • Ruby throat humming bird
    • eastern kingbird
    • couches kingbird
    • olive sparrows
    • mocking birds
    • cardnials
    • house sparrows
    • Long-billed curlew
    • white tipped doves, Inca doves, morning doves, white winged doves, common ground doves, and Eurasian collared doves
there's also a bunch of other birds there that i have been having a hard time identifying. going trough the trails you'll see tons of tiny little warbler type birds hopping from tree to tree. during the spring time there are tons of humming birds that i have never seen in my bird book. it's amazing.

    Jogging

    Going through the trails

View from the top of one of the trails. i jog this entire track every other day. there's more up hill action to the left, but it is all covered up by trees. i will try to get a better picture soon.
